Symposium 2013

From February 21 to 23, 2013, on the initiative of Prof. Dr. Alexandra Kertz-Welzel, an International Symposium on the topic of "Community Music" and its relationship to music education was held for the first time at LMU Munich.

International experts met for a joint exchange of knowledge and discussed, among other things, the extent to which community music can be compatible with school practice, and how curricula and education must change in order to integrate community music activities in the future.

Speakers included Prof. Dr. Alexandra Kertz-Welzel (LMU Munich), Kathryn Deane (Sound Sense, UK), Prof. Dr. Patrick M. Jones (Syracuse University, USA), Dr. Dawn Joseph (Deakin University, Australia), Prof. Dr. David J. Elliott (New York University, USA), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jane Southcott (Monash University, Australia) and Dr. Lee Higgins (Boston University, USA). Smaller working groups and joint plenary discussions served to process the knowledge imparted. Within the context of a "Market Place", numerous examples from the practice of community music in Germany were presented.
